Last week a friend of mine passed away. Not a close friend, more of a friend of a friend. We hung out with the same circle of friends. He was just two years older than me. He died of a complication in his gastrointestinal (GI) system. His passing has me reflecting on the importance of a healthy GI system and the challenges we face in maintaining health today. The GI system, starts from the mouth and travels 30 feet to the anus. This is where 70 - 80% of the immune system resides in the body. I dare say it is the most important system in the body for our health and wellness. It is also the system that is under greatest threat from todays world of highly processed and genetically modified (GM) food. Food is information and medicine for the body. It also is its energy source, providing all the calories and nutrients the body needs to function. The body desires and needs food as it is found in nature, as our Creator designed for us. The average American eats fast food 4-5 times a week and at the home consumes 60% of their calories from highly processed food. This "food" as we call it is so far removed from its natural state, that we can confidently call it non-food because it does not provide the information, medicine and nutrients the body needs. This non-food we have become addicted to is destroying our country one beautiful soul at a time. It causes inflammation, malnutrition, obesity, diabetes, depression, cancer and death. It robs people of their brothers and friends, sons and cousins. It makes people feel like there is something genetically wrong with them, like they were born destined to be unhealthy and unhappy for life. But we were not created to live a life of misery. God gave us an abundance of plants and animals to provide nutrition, medicine and information for our bodies to grow and thrive. We just need to make a choice about what we feed ourselves and our family. We have to take back control of our own health and those we love. We have to retrain our tastebuds that apple slices and raisins are just as tasty as a candy bar. We have to make the change ourselves and then encourage those around us to do the same. There is no magic pill that brings health. There is only a lifestyle of making wise choices around how you take care of your body. Your body is a sacred gift, given by the Creator, for you to use and enjoy this life with. I urge you, I implore you to treat it that way. Educate yourself on the dangers of GM and processed food, learn how to cook, make food a celebration, a substance that brings us together for fellowship. Thank the Creator for his gifts of healthy food and a body that can heal itself when given proper nutrition. Make the change in your own life and then tell everyone you love, encouraging them to do the same. It is time we take back the health of our families, nation and world! And it starts with your decision on what to eat. In memory of Andrew Jaffe.
